The Železné Hory massif gives the impression of a landscape wave sliding down from the Hlinecké hills, Pešava and Hradiště, accompanied by the Chrudimka River. The area widens towards the north. The varied landscape forms a balanced whole. The bedrock is amongst to the richest in the Czech Republic. There are quartzites, diorites, Permian sandstones, arenaceous marl sediments, mesozoic sandstones and also quaternary loess loam and eluvial sediments. The western edge is the dominating feature of the landscape. It is also a significant ecological corridor. Lichnice castle is surrounded by the Lichnice national nature reserve, which is a supraregional biocentre. In the southern part is situated the Doubrava River’s deep canyon. In its surroundings are the Údolí Doubravy, Zlatá Louka and Mokřadlo nature reserves and a range of near natural ecosystems. Along the Chrudimka River forest ecosystems, remnants of herbaceous-rich meadows and floodplains prevail. A sparse structure of housing estates, remains of local folk buildings and rich vegetation have been conserved in the region. There has been recent tourism development (especially hiking and cycling), due to the area’s location close to the big cities and also due to the rich and varied landscape.
